Red Star Terminals

It's no secret that Holland reopened a sizeable number of Red Star's terminals after Red Star closed, but the locations of the terminals Holland didn't reopen seem to be lost to time. Of three I was generally able to learn about, I was only able to get an address for the Boston terminal in Billerica, MA. Estes is using it now.

I know they were in Rochester, NY and Portland, ME but no addresses come up through Google. I also know they had terminals in Toronto and Montreal, at least once upon a time, but there are no service maps or addresses for any of it.

I was wondering if anyone could fill in the blanks. I would hate for this information to be lost to time and would like to see what is going on with these terminals today.

Update: Plattsburgh, NY was flattened to make room for a restaurant. Rochester, NY doesn't appear to be in use for more than storage. ODFL is using Portland, ME. And Long Island, NY appears to have been flattened and turned into a storage lot.

For anyone curious how I dug this all up, I used the Wayback Machine internet archive to access usfc.com circa 2004. The terminal locator didn't work precisely, but the archive itself was able to access stored data from the locator.

The Newark NJ I terminal is there and intact at 400 Delancy Street. It's now Continental Hardware, the building is almost the same. The dock and inside doors are filled with lumber and the yard has outside lumber racks and brick storage. On the south side of the property they cut a rail spur into the property to unload Brick/lumber. The office upstairs are rented out. Even the old shaky parking deck is still there. The large shop on the back I don't know about.

The South Brunswick NJ terminal is till there. FedEx Freight is in there , remodeled the whole place. Is just off of Route 130 on the south side.

Red Star opened a Detroit terminal in the late seventies. I left the area in 1981. I heard Red Star shut their Detroit terminal down a couple of years later.

Former USF Red Star Express terminal in Philadelphia at 3000 Orthodox Street (this address was hard to find, correct me if I'm wrong!) is occupied by Universal Waste Solutions Inc. and Total Transportation Corporation, a school bus operator. What a shame.

Red Star's Pittsburgh terminal in Leetsdale (tough one to track down, thanks to it's non-address location near Buncher) appears to be completely vacant.

The Red Star term in Newark still has the big sign on the end on the building. Have to look and see if it is lit up at night

That sign was the pride of Jerry Bisgrove the owner of Red Star. 400 Delancy St used to be the old Railway Express building with US Custom House offices in the front. Red Star put a lot of money into that terminal. We were a profitable privately owned union carrier even after TNT bought us. It was USF who brought us down.

I drove down the turnpike last Saturday night and didn’t see it lit up, could have missed though. I was trying to look and see the giant new warehouse built on the old englehard property across the street. When it opens you won’t be able to get off the Delancy St exit of 1&9 north.
