FedEx Freight | Ice road truckin

I would do it, if only had enough time off here..... think they would let you take unpaid leave of absence so others at the bottom of the list could work through the winter??

I didn't know there was a ice road thread over here on your Fedex Freight forum untill I saw Smokestack posting on it from the top of the truckingboards opening page.

Theres a thread on this topic at the General Trucking forum.
A few posters to that thread figured out the costs involved,if you were an owner operator to run the ice road.
They say you have to fill your tanks with high priced premium fuel so it wouldn't gell.
Theres also your logging, unless you live in your tractor all the time, and meals.

With tractors breaking down I thought it would be better to fly as far up into Canada that has truck leasing companies.
Then take out a short term lease for this short season.
It may cost you a lot for a high risk insurance policy in case the tractor went for a swim.

Looking at all of the costs involved,as well as the high risk, the only reason I can see for doing this is if your retired looking for an adventure.

Although I guess you could drop your set,or route trailer if your an LTL driver.
Then shoot up there to draw as many loads as you could before your company catches up with you.

The only problem there is more then likely they would fire you.
Then you'd have to look else where for work.

I wounder if a stunt like that would be brought up when the next perspective employer asks what kind of worker you were for them?

The bottom line here unless your retired it wouldn't be worth it.

I hope they do a re-cap show like they did with the Deadliest Catch captains. Have em sit down with the drivers and see what happened off camera. See if Rick went back to work for Hugh when they returned home.

I agree with the rest of ya. Hugh was an A$$. All he saw was dollar signs. Hope he lost money on this year's adventure.

My biggest problem with working in those conditions would be the cold. Can you imagine working on truck with pliers or cresent wrench in -40 degree temps? They worked in it like it was +30 degrees. I'd have so many layers on I wouldn't be able to move.

I think I could handle driving on the ice. It was well patroled. Traveled in groups.Think the top speed on the ice was only 20 mph.

Might have missed it but did they ever say what the odds of going through was? Through the years, how many have gone through? One a year? Two a year? One every several years?
What are the odds of one of us having the big one down here on a good road?

I have no idea where you live FredEx?
Because I'm a city driver for UPS Freight out of the Rochester NY terminal.
Some days in our winter season the temps go down to negative 30 with the wind chill added in.

We still have to make our city deliveries, and pickups no matter how cold it gets around here.
Well only when our tractors don't gell up,like they did one week this last winter.

Extreme temps are hard to handle, but we always manage to work through it.

Your question about getting a recap.
If you go to The History Channel - Home Page
They are selling the DVR of that show with footage that wasn't shown on TV.
Maybe there will be something on their site that will answer your question?

Its real funny how Hugh says he fired Drew, when the whole world saw Drew quit. I think Rick wanted an reason to go home, he should have fixed that heater and had the shop bill Hugh for it. He didnt try hard enough....

Watching the documentary right now. Went back to the 60's when Denison ran the first truck across the lakes. Amazing......
Only thing they used for navigation was watching the wind direction.
No windows in half the trucks. To fry an egg they used blow torch to burn shell off and then put frozen egg in pan......
20 deaths through the years..........

And we complain about working conditions......
