John was one heck of good man. Always took the time to speak with you whenever he'd make appearance where ever I was working over the years. This guy has done a lot to help get us where we're at these days. Rest in peace John. Thanks for all you've done.

John Yowell

HIGH POINT – John Barry Yowell, of High Point, N.C., died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, in his home.

John was born Oct. 15, 1951, in Baltimore, Md., to Andrew Franklin and Teresa Spadafore Yowell, both of whom preceded his passing.

John left behind his wife, Audrey Congdon, and two children, Seth and Megan Yowell of High Point, N.C. Siblings Brenda Vacek and husband Greg, Karen MacDonald and husband Scott, and Drew Yowell. As well as, his in-laws Earl and Kathryn Congdon, Karen Pigman and husband Stanley, David Congdon and wife Helen. In addition to a large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews and community who all referred to him as “Unkin’ John.”

Not only was John a great father to his children, he was a selfless role model and leader to his Old Dominion Family. As Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, his commitment to his work family was as strong as his responsibilities at home. From returning every phone call and email to doing those infamous Holiday Commercials every year, he was willing to do whatever it took to keep his family together and always doing so with a smile.

John’s dedication to his community was reflective of his continuous service to help others. As an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, he was loyal member of the Brotherhood and a strong advocate for the continuous improvement of the youth ministry. A long time board member and current President of The Piedmont School, John’s devotion to children’s happiness and education has contributed to the school’s success.

John was also past president and a long time board member of both Hospice of the Piedmont and Open Door Ministries. Participating in many Eagle and Gold Award projects, he was a great supporter of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. His involvement and accomplishments extend far beyond those listed but it was rarely known because of his humble spirit.

John loved to retreat to his farm in Davidson County, where he had planned to retire, enjoying the great outdoors with his family and friends. His enthusiasm and hopefulness will never be forgotten and will live on forever in those he has touched.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of John Yowell will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Sara Palmer and the Reverend David Umphlett officiating. The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be given to the Building Fund of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 108 Farriss Avenue, High Point, NC 27262. Online condolences may be made at Cumby Family Funeral Home | Funeral & Cremation Services for High Point, NC - Archdale, NC - High Point, NC - Residents. Arrangements by Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

I never met Mr. Yowell, however this news profoundly saddened me. This is due to the way that ODFL has cultivated a feeling of family.

One can't help but wonder if the company's drivers haven't lost one of the few advocates they have with the passing of Mr. Yowell.

We lost a great man at O.D.F.L..For those of you who never met John, John was one you could count on and that open door policy everyone talks about , was a true policy with him if you just needed a freind that was the man to count on , if you had a problem he would try to fix it . R.I.P John

God bless John and his family. He was a good man and an example for how each of us should treat each other no matter what level of authority you may have.
