how much over weight it to much to pull? just asking, we are having issues at our term and not liking answers we are getting........

With all the rules changing and states needing money, I think 1 lb is too much overweight. Screw it, they can re work it. Although if a place is dark and there's a trailer to run, I'll let up to 200 lbs slide if the trailer already shows that it's made the way from another state. With today's DOT, I just dont like playing games anymore.

Didn't know P/D pulled that kinda weight,or that any metro areas had truck scales within city limits(usually find them on highways leading into or out of cities)or are you having issues with city trucks being tagged for 50k?

Well both. But I run around 350 mls on my "city" run over 100 miles to first stop usually.. they told us 50k tractor were orig 80k so there is no saftey issues they can pull it and don't worry we will pay fine and you won't get any points on lic....this came from corp what a joke how can they make us pull heavy. It not safe.....had 42600 on tandems with twin screw made them pull bill off after I complained they finally did refuse to pull they weren't happy...

CSA 2010 says the record of overweight is going to folow the driver, also go against the co. Hope this helps.

Many of the local city,s here in Utah have "Seen the Light " and now have full time truck enforcement officers with scales. Many company's are tagging their local trucks as cheap as they can to cut cost's. Some are wanting a log book for city drivers. Gone are the day's when they just wave the LTL's thru. If it is not legal don't leave the gate.

I think most of us go out of our way to get the job done. However, with the new CSA rules we just can't take chances anymore. So much is now being put on the drivers and it will follow you and stay on your license for years. Sure the company will pay any fines, so they say, but if you are overweight and get into a wreck is the company going to pay for an attorney to represent you in a criminal or civil suit? Don't count on it.

Overweight or overgross we all go out with a loads that are sometimes overweight if its 100 to 1000 lbs over on axle if the dispatcher signs it (ok to run per dispatcher name) if not, its a no go. You never want to go with a overgross load, thats a noooooooo!! The company can not make you haul a overweight or a overgross load per the State law, CSA2010, DOT or go to FMCSA PT.658,APP.C:Appendix C to Part 658 what the companys must follow on the Interstatesystem weight system. Its your license not ODFL. Far as having a accident with a overweight on a axle but not overgross, thats up to the courts but I do know if you have accident with a overgross load, its you ass and the companys in the courts.

some states dot inspector will lay out portable scales. Last year we had one driver get pulled over by and got a ticket for being over weight. Company said okay they will pay it but they never did until the driver got a noticed that he failed to appear in court.

I have not herd of this in Ohio. But I do know that some drivers that are coming will be over weight on an axle and will go around a scale to avoid it.

You would think with the computers on board that it could weigh your drive axle since that is what most likley to be over.

I think the real simple answer here is that it doesn't matter if it's 5lbs or 500lbs overweight. It doesn't matter if it's 100 lbs over on an axle or 100lbs over gross. You do not have any obligation to pull that load. You can refuse it. Sure your dispatcher might give you grief about it, but at the end of the day it's your job. On another note if you have a tractor registered for 50,000. guess what 50,001 lbs gross is overweight. don't fall into the B.S. about it's ok because the company will pay the fine. Yes they probably will pay the fine, however like I said before it's your job and your driving record. I know the game fairly well but I also know my legal rights. :) contact the D.O.T. if any of this might sound shocking.

Can I barge in here? Well okay.. I will anyway :p

I'm noticing how many drivers refuse to take anything overweight, and rightly so of course, but it makes me wonder how common is it for a carrier or shipper to load a trailer too heavy? I mean, it looks to me like everybody will just refuse to haul it and I have to figure they already know that, so they should already know they'll just have to do the extra work of unloading part of it, and probably have to redistribute the load as well. Do they just like doing extra work? Or do they actually find, or expect to find, a driver willing to take it?

Its not really that uncommon getting a pup thats a little overweight,a few years ago if one of your axles was a little over(say a few hundred lbs.)we'd just have a dispatcher sign off on it,and off you'd go,only once did I get a ticket for being 550lbs over on the trailer and OD paid it although I had to move about 30 bags of zinc oxide to the front of the trailer. With the CSA this isnt probably a good thing to do,but from what I've seen lately on the CSA scoring overweights score pretty small as compared to speeding citations,or even having a clearance light go out.

I have to take a more in depth look at how the scoring works.

I'm not sure if I picked a good time to join the industry, or a bad time. But sure did pick an interesting time.
