I've never seen so many rusty 5th wheels in all my trucking career. Some of them the manufactures name is visable. I don't think the self greasers are working on alot of these tractors. If they aren't greasing the 5th wheels, are they greasing tierod ends, slack ajusters and s-cams. Do yourself a favor and grease your 5th wheel by hand. If your terminal doesn't have a barrel of grease and a pallet slat suggest that one is aquired. Spring starts today but you don't want your trailer to steer your tractor, even in the rain, much less the snow. This goes for dollies also. NOTE If you grease your 5th wheel, dump your suspension and back under the trailer until your close to, but not against, the pin, then fill the suspension and hit the pin. This will put the grease on the trailer plate rather than scraping it off on the front of the trailer. Press on

I may be wrong, but the grease lines go to the 5th wheel and appear to grease more than the "ears". Anyone out there from a shop can that can verify? There are 2 slots on the outer sides of the 5th wheel and the main valley around the jaws that I am under the impression was on auto grease. Press on

where is the grease stored on the truck?
between the cab and the fifth wheel on the curb side of the tractor. I Think they started this in the late 90's or so. There is a little white or gray box just under the front of the fifth wheel that has a button on it. If you have the power on and push the button you can see the grease come out of the hole on the fifth wheel. I do it the old way, A bucket of grease and a stick. It's faster.

Yes they are there. I greased it with a stick also. It is faster.

There's a black tube like container between the crossmembers with about 30 small black tubes coming out the bottom. look at you slack ajusters and different grease points and you'll see that the greaselines go from front to rear of the tractor and grease all the pivot points. Either way Ladies and Gentlemen...keep your wheel greased. Press on

Just another tidbit for those that don't know. The new tractors have a "trac off" switch on the dash, the older tractors ( 02, 03 ) have two rocker switches under the dash by your left leg, next to were the hook-up to read the computer is located. One locks the rear and does away with wheel spin and the other one turns off your ABS. Remember, no dollies have ABS, so if your tractor and both trailers have ABS it will be the dolly that "locks up" first. Press on:1036316054:

the grease is in a coffee can sized clear container under the fifth wheel just above the drive axle on my 1999 sterling great truck starts better than the new ones and does not break often has 800,000 mi on it soon it will be gone sob sob the great memories from the last 6 years

We do get paid for all maintenance we do on our tractors. I don't give them a thing.$@#$ you pay me!

Keeping the fifth wheel greased will help the steer tires wear better too. Also spray the fifth wheel pin with wd40 or any spray lube. It makes them easier to pull (tractor and dolly). P&D guys spray lube works great for roll doors too- well that and a pry bar to pop the rollers back in after every stop.:1036316054:

The day guys complain that they cannot get any overtime, well what is wrong with doing some of the maintenence when they get back from P&D? Maybe clean a windsheild once in a while, change the wiperblades, or sweep the floor.

That most centers if a p-d driver is on over time and does maintenance they will be skinned.

Off topic but it needs to be said.

Unity is not hard, but it always starts with 'u' and ends with 'y'.....

Just thinking a little bit up in Cheeseheadland.
